Hi, My name is Emilee Garfield.

I know the pain and embarrassment of living with an ileostomy.

What’s an ileostomy? It’s surgery where part of your intestine is pulled through your abdomen to save your life. You then go into a bag. If you know what I mean.

I am raising funds for ileostomy reversal so Ugandan girls can regain normal bowel function and live with hope for the future.

I was diagnosed with stage 3C Ovarian Cancer and underwent life-saving surgery. But I wanted to die when I saw what my body looked like post-surgery.

Physical changes made me feel hopeless and unloveable. Emotional work helped me overcome some of that. But one event had an immediate and permanent positive effect: ileostomy reversal.

Listen to my story to learn more…

Imagine struggling every day because your insides are showing on your outside.

All those dark, shameful things you try to hide are out in the open.

Literally.

That’s what it’s like after colon surgery.

My Mission For A Jar Of Hope…

It is my mission to aid women and girls to have an ileostomy reversal like I did. It’s the difference between hiding in shame and opening to a world of opportunities.

My heart broke when I learned this…

Twenty young girls in a tiny Ugandan village are desperately hoping to have normal lives again. Alex, the orphanage director, tells me that Ileostomy reversal surgery costs an average of $2000.00 per girl. But the median yearly salary in Uganda is $765—while the average American spends $1000+ just on coffee!

You can help these girls go from a life of certain despair to one of possibility.

Right now these girls live in shame—and filth. Communities and their whole families often shun them. A stoma (the outside connection point for a bag) is messy and smelly. Imagine being a poor mom choosing between feeding your family or getting a colon bag for your young daughter.  You wrap your baby girl in used, dirty shirts to cover her up but you’re regularly covered in a mess of fluid from her intestines.

I’ll spare you the rest, but I lived through an ileostomy myself and, even with the best medical care, it was the worst time of my life.

Their pain and suffering is unimaginable.

Covid 19 completely eliminated funding to my friends in this orphanage and village. They are struggling with food and shelter so ileostomy reversal is low on their priority list.

Without surgery, these girls will likely never be contributing members of society, condemned to poverty.

This is why I am sharing these pictures with you. As hard as it may be for some people to see, this is the reality of so many.

I won’t sit back and wonder if I could help a girl avoid the physical and emotional scars that I carried as a cancer survivor at age 4.

My mission is to help women in cancer recovery reclaim their strength and hope. My mission has expanded to help humans suffering from the lack of medical care and essential supplies who live with an Ileostomy.

The only thing stopping these kids from having this life changing surgery is a lack of money. There is no insurance, no credit cards, no rich relatives. They can barely feed their children.

What if that was your baby?

Send the best Christmas present a parent could give their child—a chance to thrive.

As a urologist who focuses on pelvic wellness, I can affirm the need for such a positive recovery program after urologic treatments for cancer and other pathologies. Emilee’s book Reclaim Your Strength and Hope: Exercises for Cancer Core Recovery.

ILANA CASS, MD
PROFESSOR OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY, CEDARS SINAI MEDICAL CENTER

“As a gynecological surgeon, I know that this isn’t easy territory. Surgery, recovery in a hospital and then the cancer treatments can all conspire to rob women of any sense of control over their bodies.
Emilee shows women safe, gradual steps that women can do from their hospital bed to their own bedrooms to build endurance, confidence and strength. Emilee’s book is there at your side along the journey to feeling whole again.
I wholeheartedly endorse Emilee’s cancer recovery plan and her spirit embodied in this unique book for women.”

Cancer Survivor Testimonial

BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR

“Emilee has helped me not only recover physically but has been a constant positive encouragement emotionally. I was given the opportunity to try her cancer core recovery program directly after my major surgery BILATERAL DIEP FLAP [day one in the hospital bed].

Her program is like no other on the market because it is targeted toward those who need to take it extremely slow from major surgery, focusing on abdominal surgery but good for many surgical and cancer treatments.

Have you become a fatigued couch potato from chemo? Try Emilee’s program and get your life back on track!

Had an oophorectomy, hysterectomy, mastectomy, etc? Being a certified coach AND ovarian cancer thriver Emilee knows exactly what it’s like to be us, no sympathetic guessing on what it’s like, she’s been there and that has definitely helped her to find her passion…helping others [like me]!”
